Into the Mystery
In jazz, solo piano provides some of the best opportunities for researching new musical combinations when improvising. The results can be unpredictable. The pianist will find plenty of pieces ready to start the mosaic. In my case these may be original compositions, but also songs by my favorite musicians (Kid Ory, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Thelonious Monk, Lennie Tristano, John Coltrane) – still carrying the scent of their various eras in jazz. But the final twist in the plot is always yet to come: every night, the story that unfolds on stage will always be different. What’s more, sometimes a new musical element can come to light as I play – something unknown whose implications are unclear. Responding to this new element means opening up a breach… “into the mystery”.
